| Pharmacodynamic Properties |
Mode of Action: Uncouples oxidative phosphorylation in parasite mitochondria, preventing energy production. This leads to rapid depletion of ATP and parasite death. Spectrum: Highly effective against cestodes (tapeworms) such as Taenia saginata, Taenia solium, Diphyllobothrium latum, and Hymenolepis nana. Limited or no efficacy against nematodes or trematodes. Additional Effects: Used as a veterinary and human anthelmintic. Has been investigated for anticancer, antiviral, and antifungal potential in research. Key Features: Poor systemic absorption → acts primarily within the intestinal lumen. Considered safe due to minimal systemic exposure. Often given as chewable tablets for ease of administration. In short: Niclosamide is a well-established anthelmintic drug used primarily for intestinal tapeworm infections, working by disrupting parasite energy metabolism in the gut. |
