Mode of Action:  Acts as a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist in nematodes, causing persistent stimulation of muscle contraction, spastic paralysis, and expulsion of the parasite.  

Spectrum: Effective mainly against gastrointestinal nematodes (Ascaris, Strongyloides, Trichostrongylus, Ancylostoma). Limited or no activity against cestodes and trematodes.  

Additional Effects: Known to possess immunomodulatory effects in some species. Precursor to Levamisole (the L-isomer with higher activity and lower toxicity).  

Key Features: Racemic mixture of Levamisole (active isomer) and Dextromisole (less active isomer). Used primarily in veterinary medicine; less common in human medicine today. Superseded by Levamisole HCl in most clinical settings due to better efficacy and safety.  

In short:  Tetramisole HCl is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic mainly used in veterinary medicine, though largely replaced by Levamisole HCl, its more active and safer isomer.
